Reclaiming the Sierra

Announcing 2017 Keynotes Lawrie Mott and Jordan Fisher Smith

March 22, 2017

The Sierra Fund is excited to announce conference keynote speakers Lawrie Mott and Jordan Fisher Smith. Join us in welcoming these two voices in water politics and wild places to Reclaiming the Sierra 2017!

Lawrie Mott, environmental health and science expert and former senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council, is currently completing a final chapter to update her late husband Marc Reisner’s Cadillac Desert, the seminal text on water in the west, 30 years after the original publication. Mott’s keynote address will take place Monday, May 8.

Jordan Fisher Smith spent over two decades as a park and wilderness ranger in the West and Northwest. His service in the American River canyons during the long-delayed construction of the Auburn Dam inspired his critically-acclaimed 2005 memoir, Nature Noir. His new book Engineering EdenThe True Story of a Violent Death, a Trial, and the Fight Over Controlling Nature, was nominated for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing prize. Smith is scheduled to speak Tuesday, May 9.
