DOC_Bear_Logo_ColorThe Division of Mine Reclamation’s goal is to see mined lands returned to a usable and safe condition after mining is completed. The Division was established in 1991 to provide a measure of oversight for local governments as they administer the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1975 (SMARA) within their respective jurisdictions. To accomplish this goal, the Division provides comments to lead agencies on a mining operation’s reclamation plan and financial assurance and may initiate compliance actions that encourage SMARA compliance. The Division also addresses issues stemming from the state’s tens of thousands of abandoned legacy mines that are located on public lands under the Abandoned Mine Lands Program.
