Calculate your mercury exposure

December 3, 2010

Use the mercury calculator at to estimate whether you may be consuming dangerous levels of mercury in the fish you eat.  Just enter your weight, type of fish and the amount you will eat during a week, and click the calculator button. Calculations are based average mercury levels in each kind of fish, from EPA and FDA data (updated January 2006).

Do keep in mind that in many cases, wild caught fish from Sierra Nevada lakes, reservoirs and rivers have higher levels of mercury than the state or national average.  Consult California fish consumption advisories (when available) for the most accurate information about how much fish you can safely eat. If a fish consumption advisory is not available for the location or type of fish you are interested in, it does not necessarily mean that fish has safe levels of mercury.
