California State University Chico
The Geological and Environmental Sciences (GEOS) Department at California State University, Chico is a founding sponsor of Reclaiming the Sierra, and a longtime partner in The Sierra Fund’s initiative to assess and address the impacts of legacy mining. In the GEOS Department, building on learning both in and outside the classroom, students conduct applied and basic research to enhance their understanding of these systems. A major learning goal is that students recognize and understand human activities, the environment, and the local, regional, and global scale. A major feature of all degree programs is that they place a strong emphasis on providing students with excellent hands-on skills. Geology students develop field skills in mapping, describing rocks, and use of maps and compass. Students in the various options under environmental sciences likewise learn to use state-of-the-art instruments and field techniques for water measurement and testing, chemical analysis, vegetation inventory, geophysics, and meteorology.
